FRIEND…Not a word to be tossed around lightly,
though too often it is;
it’s used to associate, to familiarize, to lend credence.
But in actuality, it is an experience all too rare
and altogether unique.
FRIEND…
There is a picture in my mind that says it best for me:
there on either side of a deep clear pool
sit you and I …
both equipped with hooks, line, and poles …
fishermen, so to speak.
Collected in the pool are not fish,
but rather, the total of our experiences;
ideas and ideals… concepts and precepts… all that we are.
Each day, you and I stock this pool we “fish” from…
And each day, we are free to pull new ideas
and experiences from it…
or, free not to.
The choice is always ours…
YOURS… MINE.
You are welcome to take anything you see in the pool…
just as you are welcome not to.
And so it is for me.
There are no hard feelings.
There is only joy in those things we are fortunate enough to share…
and celebration in the uniqueness expressed by those we aren’t.
FRIEND…
No, not just a word… much more:
a most intimate experience of sharing…
of baring one’s soul…
of exhibiting strengths and frailties alike
without fear…
of opening up, like a bud that blossoms in Spring.
FRIEND…
Certainly something to be shared with a very few…
not that many friends would not be nice…
just highly unlikely.
It’s a special breed of person…
an endangered species, if you will.
FRIEND…
I’ve known many good people…
had many good acquaintances…
but have very few friends.
And knowing this, I say with joy…
“I LOVE YOU, FRIEND!”
